Small Business Chamber sponsors meetings on health care

Beginning today, a series of meetings will be held around the state to explain the federal health care law and offer information about a new small business health plan.
The events, sponsored by the S.C. Small Business Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Small Business Majority, will examine the law’s benefits to small businesses and the state’s role in its implementation.
Details about the small business health plan also will be announced. The Small Business Chamber has partnered with the Carolina Care Plan to offer health insurance for firms.
The events, which are free and open to all small-business owners, will feature a panel of experts and advocates discussing the topics in the new law most relevant to small businesses. These include small business tax credits, the state’s work in setting up a health insurance exchange, wellness grants and cost containment.
It will also give small-business owners a chance to provide the panel ideas and suggestions on how to proceed with implementing health care reform in South Carolina.
“There have been many reforms to our health care system over the past year, both nationally and in South Carolina,” said Frank Knapp, president and CEO of the S.C. Small Business Chamber. “It’s important that small-business owners hear about how many of the new health care law’s business-friendly provisions can help, and also for them to tell us what the state can do to make health care reform work for them.”
Locations and times for the meetings are:
•Today – Berkeley Electric Co-op Johns Island District Office, 3351 Maybank Highway, Johns Island, 6-8 p.m.
•Tuesday – International Longshoreman’s Association Union Hall, 1142 Morrison Drive, Charleston, 8-10 a.m.
•Tuesday, Sept. 6 – Midlands Tech Harbison Theater, Columbia, 6-8 p.m.
•Tuesday, Sept. 13 – West Columbia City Hall, 200 N. 12th St., West Columbia, 6-8 p.m.
•Tuesday, Sept. 27 – Greenville County Library, 25 Heritage Green Place, Greenville, 6-8 p.m.
